Cycling Group Calls for 20mph Zones to Reduce Number of Accidents

A cycling charity in Glasgow has called for a detailed analysis of where road traffic accidents in the city take place to have the correct speed limit restrictions in place.

CTC Glasgow is calling for the City Council to ensure that 20mph zones become the norm, especially in areas that frequently result in accidents and fatalities for cyclists.

The organisation’s main concern is that the 20mph zones in the city will not be properly sited. CTC Glasgow has called for those planning the speed limits to include arterial roads and roundabouts that are shown to have a significantly higher number of accidents and a higher average number of pedestrian and cyclist casualties.

Vulnerable Road Users Accidents Glasgow

A study revealed that cyclists and vulnerable road users were much more likely to have an accident on roads leading into the city centre particularly where there is a combination of shops, on-street parking, frequent junctions and no cycle facilities. The study also found that dual carriageways were particularly dangerous for cyclists, with roundabouts on dual carriageways being the highest at-risk area. Auldhouse roundabout, on a dual carriageway on route to a retail park is the highest single cycle accident locality in the city.

The news regarding the number of vulnerable road users in accidents last year prompted Glasgow and other major cities in the UK to introduce 20mph zones, a move that has been welcomed by cycling safety organisations and road safety groups. The CTC stated that the introduction of such zones would drastically reduce the number, and severity, of cyclist and pedestrian accidents. However, such groups have also urged the city council to prioritise high-risk areas in the city.
