Becoming a Solicitor in Scotland: My Legal Journey so Far

Discovering an Interest in Scottish Law

Like many teenagers, I wasn’t entirely sure what career path to go down. I loved dancing and music and I enjoyed English-based subjects like Modern Studies. As I went into S4 I began to become really interested in the law. While my creative interests kept me busy, it was this curiosity about legal systems that ultimately pointed me toward studying law.

Navigating Education During COVID-19

COVID-19 had a significant impact on my studies in S5. Therefore, I didn’t sit my all-important Highers! This really made me really nervous, as these were the qualifications I would be applying to university with. Despite my nerves about applying with teacher predictions, I managed to secure good grades and received a conditional offer from the University of Glasgow. After completing the LNAT and the University of Glasgow’s widening access summer school, I was awarded a place to study the Scots Law LLB.

Starting My Scottish Legal Studies

I started my studies in 2021 and I found studying law challenging but very rewarding. To qualify as a solicitor in Scotland, I completed all the essential subjects, including Scottish Legal Systems, Family Law, Property Law, Obligations (Contract and Delict), Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and European Union Law. The highlight of my degree was studying abroad in sunny Australia at Queensland University of Technology!

Joining the Legal Profession

In my fourth year, I applied for the Complete Clarity legal assistant role. I attended their renowned recruitment night and was thrilled to be offered the role after a nerve-wracking interview with directors Billy and Emma! I started in January in my new role alongside Lily and Breanna, my fellow legal assistants.

Hands-On Experience in Business and Property Law

In my role as legal assistant, I work within the client services department, acting as the first point of contact for clients, booking appointments and doing various other administrative tasks. Recently, I have specialised in the Business and Property Law department, which has allowed me to work alongside the solicitors in that team to draft offers, work within the conveyancing team and liaise with clients, solicitors and estate agents alike. I’m fortunate to be gaining this hands-on legal experience alongside my studies, and I truly value the opportunity to apply what I’m learning in a practical setting.

Graduating and Looking Ahead – The Road to Qualification

I graduated from the University of Glasgow with first-class honours in June, a particularly meaningful achievement as a first generation lawyer. The next step for me in qualification will be attending the University of Strathclyde in September to complete the diploma in legal practice and then progressing onto a two year long legal traineeship. After 7 years I will then be admitted as a fully qualified solicitor and will apply to obtain my practising certificate.

Working in law is challenging and stimulating, yet incredibly rewarding. I’m excited to see what the future holds in my legal career.
